New Zealand-based Zespri International Limited has introduced a novel packaging solution known as the fruit pillbox in Singapore, in collaboration with The Shed 28, Mindshare, Speak Easy and Peppercomm, to tackle the challenge of forgetfulness among Singaporeans when it comes to maintaining a nutritious diet. Its packaging incorporates a distinctive nudge mechanism to promote healthier eating habits.
Zespri conducted a survey involving more than 500 Singaporeans, revealing that 93% expressed a desire to increase their fruit intake. However, more than one-third of respondents cited poor memory as a hindrance. Addressing this issue, the fruit pillbox has been designed with seven compartments labelled “Monday through Sunday”, each containing a Zespri SunGold kiwifruit for every day of the week.
The concept of the fruit pillbox draws inspiration from nudge behavioural economics. A nudge serves as a strategic method to influence individuals’ choices, guiding them toward particular decisions. For instance, strategically placing fruit at eye level or near the checkout counter in a high school cafeteria exemplifies a nudge tactic to encourage students to opt for healthier alternatives.
