Stratus Vineyards, a sustainable winemaking company, has launched super-premium wine in reused bottles.
This initiative is part of a pilot project aimed at assessing the feasibility of collecting and cleaning wine bottles for reuse, as opposed to recycling them for other industries.

The project comes in response to a life cycle assessment study conducted in partnership with Niagara College’s environmental programme, which began in 2020.
The study with Niagara College in Canada examined the carbon footprint of the winery’s operations, from vineyard activities to bottling processes. It highlighted that glass production accounted for 39% of the winery’s carbon emissions.
The reuse of glass bottles is a practice not yet common in the Canadian wine industry, despite its success in some European regions and the beer industry.
To advance this sustainable packaging initiative, Stratus Vineyards collaborated with Circulr, a company from Kitchener, Ontario, specialising in the reuse of glass, particularly in food packaging.

By GlobalDataCirculr conducted trials on Stratus wine bottles, focusing on label removal, sterilisation, and food safety.
These bottles have been collected from consumers and the winery’s tasting room and repurposed for Field Blend of rare Ontario wine varieties, including Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Tannat.
The wine, which celebrates both innovation and tradition through co-fermentation, will be released on Earth Day, 22 April 2024.
Circulr co-founder Tyler DeSousa said: “This is the start of something truly impactful for the Canadian wine industry. We’re excited to keep growing this initiative and are fortunate to have found a leader like Stratus that is willing to evoke change.”
This reuse initiative is the latest initiative of Stratus Vineyards in its commitments towards improving the environment.
The company attained Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification at its full facility, making it the first winery in the world to achieve this.
