Norton Packaging, a company based in the US, started construction of a new plastic container plant in Monticello, Jasper County, in the city of Georgia, in February 2013.

The plant will be located at the Industrial Park of Monticello. It will be Norton Packaging’s third plant in the US. It will produce plastic injection moulded rigid shipping containers.
The $12m project will be managed by the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) and the Development Authority of Jasper County. The GDEcD will partner with the Electric Membership Corporations (EMC) and the Electric Cities of Georgia (ECG) for the project.
The new facility is expected to provide more than 80 jobs for the people residing in the area.
Norton Packaging currently operates three plants in the US – two in California and one in Indiana. The Californian plants are located in Los Angeles and Hayward. The Indiana plant is located in Hamlet. The plants provide packaging services for paint, janitorial, petrochemical, adhesive, agricultural chemicals and food sectors.
Norton Packaging’s Georgia site
The new 76,000ft² facility in Georgia will be located in proximity with the proposed port in Jasper County, and will be accessible from the Savannah, Jacksonville and Charleston ports.
The ports will provide a better mode of transportation to the plant, thus allowing the quick distribution of finished products into sales networks. The new facility will serve customers in Europe, Puerto Rico and the south-east area of the US.
Injection moulding at the new Georgian packaging plant
The new packaging plant will produce plastic injection moulded rigid shipping containers.
The plastic material is heated into a barrel, mixed completely and sent to a mould cavity structure.
The mould cavity structures are of different sizes designed by the tool engineer. In the structure, the material is cooled and hardens to form a cylinder structure. The cylindrical structures are polished, shined and formed into the rigid plastic containers.
The products manufactured at the plant will pass through stringent test procedures such as drop test, leak-proof test, hydrostatic pressure test and stack test.
The rigid plastic containers are used commonly in industrial and non-industrial applications.
Sustainability of the rigid plastic containers plant
The plant will be installed with electrical machinery systems instead of hydraulic equipment to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
The facility will employ the Food Safety and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), pest-control management practices and the US FDA’s Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points (HACCP) process to manage best quality of the packaging containers.
It will also comply with the UN Quality Standards to maintain the quality of the packaging products.
The Georgia plant will provide fast and flawless services to the customers with a quick end to end delivery, says Norton Packaging.

Norton Packaging, headquartered in Hayword, California, is a 112-year old company co-owned by the fourth generation of the Norton brothers, Greg, Mark and Scott Norton.
The company’s plants use advanced equipment and upgraded systems for manufacturing packaging products. Norton Packaging is planning to achieve the Safe Quality Food Institute (SQF) certification for its facilities.
Norton Packaging also promotes its products through trade organisations such as the Plastic Shipping Container Institute, the Chemical and Allied Industries of Northwest Ohio, the Western Coatings Societies and Pickle Packers International.
