Notably, the number of environmental sustainability-related patent applications in the packaging industry was 574 in Q3 2022, versus 995 in the prior quarter.

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Nestle filed the most environmental sustainability patents within the packaging industry in Q3 2022. The company filed 14 environmental sustainability-related patents in the quarter, compared with 4 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Prince with 8 environmental sustainability patent filings, Eastman Chemical (6 filings), and Mubadala Investment (6 filings) in Q3 2022.
The largest share of environmental sustainability related patent filings in the packaging industry in Q3 2022 was in China with 16%, followed by the US (12%) and Japan (12%). The share represented by China was 27% lower than the 43% share it accounted for in Q2 2022.
